Codes of Conduct

It Begins with a Slippery Slope
Most serious boundary violations don’t begin with a clear violation. They begin with a small step across a line—an exception, an overly personal conversation, a relationship that becomes too close, or a behaviour that no one addresses. When those small steps go unchallenged, boundaries can slowly disappear, creating a slippery slope.
Strengthening the Circle: How Shared Oversight Prevents Elder Abuse

Why a Circle of Care Matters
No one plans for a loved one to face neglect, loneliness, or loss of voice as they age. Yet, these risks grow quietly when care falls on the shoulders of just one person. A healthy circle of care—family, friends, community members, and professionals working together—makes all the difference. When support and decisions are shared, the older adult’s safety, dignity, and wishes stay front and center. Shared oversight is more than a safety net. It’s what allows older adults to remain not just protected, but truly connected.
Anna’s Story
When Anna’s father died, she quickly became the backbone of her mother’s care. Her siblings lived hours away, so Anna managed the bills, medical appointments, groceries, and all the little emergencies that come with aging at home.
When Capacity Changes: Safeguarding Seniors During Cognitive Decline

In the last few weeks, I have heard many friends share their concerns about their parents with me, that over the holidays, they witnessed subtle shifts in memory, confidence, or decision-making, which often signal increasing vulnerability in older adults. Family members mentioned that parents or grandparents were repeating themselves, forgetting bills, or hesitating with daily routines. These small signs raise an important question:
How can support be provided as capacity changes, without removing independence or dignity?
Safeguarding is most effective when it is proactive and collaborative. Support should be introduced thoughtfully, in ways that respect autonomy and adapt as needs change.
Margaret’s story demonstrates how her children, Andrew and Lisa, is supporting her during this life change.
